Nine Banded Armadillo

Nine Banded Armadillo

Nine banded armadillo are found in the south western U.S., Central and South America. They have hard bony armor to protect them from predators and will roll into a ball when threatened. Armadillos are mainly solitary animals that are nocturnal. They hunt at night for insects, small mammals and birds, eggs, fruit and meat. During the day, they burrow in the sand to stay cool.

Nine banded armadillos are the only armadillos that can swim. They inflate their stomach and intestines with air in order to float. Another interesting fact is that a female will always give birth to four identical babies of the same sex.
